How much for your need of speed?

I live 11 miles away from my workplace and cycle into work whenever the Gods of rain, sleet, snow and thunder take a coffee break, which, in the south of England happen with surprising regularity. The Scrooge in me was initially interested in the circa five faces of the queen saved per day, over using the car, but soon the cost of commuting escalated, as the need for speed meant constant upgrades to the pedal propelled machine.
An initial commuting time of 43 minutes, has been now shaved to 34 and transpiration escalated accordingly.
My iron horse is a genesis Croix de Fer, which has been upgraded in every single component, to the point that it only bears the name and the frame of the original bike, that came in a box on a snowy January day two years ago.
I got to the point of building my own wheels, unsatisfied by the products available from the ever generous Taiwan made market. I also fitted a Campagnolo groupset to be in peace with my Italian passport and made it work with Shimano sprockets, as Campagnolo decided not to bother with the Disc brakes users. One year of commuting offsets all these extra costs and extra needs and probably offsets a few hundred kilograms of carbon dioxide as well.
So, my advice is not to scrimp on the penny with your commuter and spend a fortune on your hobby bicycle. Your commuter saves you a fortune and deserves respect... besides, it will rain on sunday, and you might as well have a bit of fun during the week
